Nevada Institutional Work
“I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me….
Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
— Christ Jesus (Matthew 25:36, 40)
The Nevada Christian Science Institutional Ministry serves individuals who are confined in county jails, state prisons, mental hospitals, and other institutions and therefore not free to take advantage of a local church’s public activities.
This Christian Science ministry serves interested inmates and patients by:
ʘ Distributing authorized Christian Science literature;
ʘ Providing Christian Science worship services, Bible study sessions, and individual conferences;
ʘ Cooperating with and supporting Christian Science branch churches, local institutional committees, and individuals in Nevada to serve in their communities.
The motive for undertaking this work is not to proselitize or enlarge church membership, but to respond to those reaching out for the truth that makes free, that reforms, heals, and uplifts. The program has helped inmates and patients to overcome physical, mental, emotional and spiritual challenges through application of the truths taught and proved by Christ Jesus as found in the Bible. The work is very similar to that in neighboring California described on the internet at lightinprison.org.
The Nevada Christian Science Institutional Ministry is established to reflect the wishes of Mary Baker Eddy to respond to institutional and appropriate community needs. Its mission is intented to fulfill Jesus’ commands, “…as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:7-8)
This ministry is organized to make possible a broader-based community effort for service beyond what might be considered the usual field of service of a single Christian Science branch church. It presents a privilege for all members of branch churches to actively support and participate and offers challenging opportunities for spiritual growth.
